Choose Your Small Business Web Host Wisely

Make no mistake -- your small business web host is your partner.

If they don't back up their servers, if they ignore security measures, if their servers are constantly down and their tech support take for ever to respond then it affects your business and will cost you money.

For the few dollars you'll save each month by using free or cheap and nasty web hosting you'll likely end up paying far more in lost business and frustration.

If you're unsatisfied with your current small business web host, then either switch over to the web host I recommend or find an alternative that offers the same level of service -- if you can find one!

Here's a few reasons why you should avoid using a free web host. How many more reasons do you need?

	You'll be seen as small time & unprofessional
	They'll shut you down instantly if there's a spam issue
	They could start charging you at any time - or you lose everything
	They can go out of business - many are "fly by night" operations
	They advertise on your web site & you have no control over this
	They may bombard your visitors with annoying pop up's

Many small business web hosts may appear to be offering you a good deal BUT --

You need to be absolutely sure they're not going to charge you for every little extra service that you need. This may not be obvious at first.

Much of the popular software such as autoresponder or ad tracking software has minimum requirements or it won't run. A checklist that will help you avoid this is provided below.

	How many "MySql" databases do they allow?
	Can you set up MySql databases yourself?
	Do they offer unrestricted Cgi-Bin access?
	Do they support at least php 4.0?
	Can you set cron events from the control panel?
	Do they even offer an online control panel?
	Can you run Perl 5 or higher?
	Do they support "Zend Optimizer" 1.1.0 or higher?

Even though you may not understand some of the technical issues above, they will still become an issue for the programmer you hire to install software on your server and the only solution, if there's a problem, will be to move your entire site to a new provider that does support the above.
